Innovation is the central theme of the ALA, and the participating University System Georgia institutional presidents used the panel opportunity to share their views on innovation and the role it plays in the future of the University System of Georgia (USG). The ALA participants enjoyed the chance to personally network with President Becker of Georgia State University, President Marrero of the University of West Georgia and President Bud Peterson of the Georgia Institute of Technology. As part of the moderated panel, each president shared the importance of having a great team and culture within their respective organizations. The presidents also discussed some critical lessons they learned along the way. Chancellor Steve Wrigley kicked off the event with welcome remarks, and participants had the chance to interact with members of the Executive Leadership team from the University System Office. The ALA program provides a structured executive-level leadership development and certification that extends beyond the initial Executive Leadership Institute experiences. The ALA prepares ELI Alumni Scholars to excel in executive roles and aligns their long-term professional goals with organizational opportunities. Additionally, the ALA rigorously identifies and prepares a select pool of executive talent in advance of vacancies in critical positions within the USG. This nine-month leadership program is aimed at identifying, informing, and investing in future college leaders while creating opportunities to collaborate with other leaders on campus. The program is designed to prepare participants for higher level responsibilities at Darton State College. The program includes self development; a reading group to discuss relevant issues related to effective leadership; skill building workshops; job shadowing; and other interactive activities that round out the experience. It is now available through open enrollment classes to individual KSU and non-KSU managers of all levels, and individual contributors aspiring for supervisory or management positions. Participants receive a certificate of completion after six courses. An optional advanced certificate can be earned upon completion of an additional three courses and an improvement project. The interactive and skill-based curriculum consists of management development courses from the global talent management company Development Dimensions International (DDI). The program is offered through KSU¡¯s Center for University Learning (CUL), a Regional Training Center for the University System of Georgia Professional Development Consortium (PDC). Courses include Essentials of Leadership, Setting Performance Expectations, Coaching for Peak Performance, Resolving Conflict in Teams, and Delegating with Purpose. Working with the Carl Vinson Institute of Government (CVIOG), another unit of the University System of Georgia, GPLS designed and held the first sessions of the vigorous training program in 2007. More than half of PINNACLE¡¯s graduates have gone on to serve as library system directors. The Executive Leadership Institute (ELI) is the flagship System-wide program developed in 2009 to prepare high-potential leaders for advancement in the University System of Georgia. The ELI strengthens core leadership skills in four critical competency areas: strategy, engagement, collaboration, and execution. The ELI targets leaders in department chair, executive director, and higher management level positions and requires an investment of approximately 120 hours of the leader¡¯s time over an eight-month period. Major institute components include group learning sessions, job shadowing, peer mentoring, and action learning. With the completion of the 2014-2015 ELI, the total number of alumni in the System increased to 278. Although participation in the ELI does not involve nor does it imply promotion or a change in position, more than ten percent of ELI Alumni have earned promotions or have been selected to assume a broader array of roles and job responsibilities. The USG Strategic Agenda includes a focus on accountability, efficiency, and innovation. This year¡¯s theme was in honor of Dr. Seuss ¨C Oh, the Places You¡¯ll Go! KSD provided a platform for the 2014 Staff Development Fund recipients to share what they learned. Some staff members traveled abroad to the UK while others obtained certifications. During the spring 2014 semester, Georgia State University piloted a grant program for staff training and professional development in areas of strategic institutional importance. The Staff Training and Development Fund (STDF) provides two categories of support for training and development. Priority is given to training/development programs that strongly support the goals of the university Strategic Plan and that have the broadest possible impact. The STDF program is administered by the university Human Resources Department in collaboration with the GSU Staff Council. The CPLP Contributor Award recognizes CPLP credential holders who put forth an outstanding effort to support, promote, and advance the CPLP certification program. Deborah Covin Wilson is the Regional Training Center (RTC) leader for Georgia State. Six Institutions have agreed to be RTC’s for the University System of Georgia’s Professional Development Consortium (PDC). Regional Training Centers assist other Institutions in their areas with professional development issues, and collaborate to develop solutions for challenges.
