University of North Georgia

University of North Georgia President Michael Shannon on Oct. 3 released a white paper outlining seven strategic “big bets” to position UNG to meet the needs of its students, communities, the state, and the nation.

“We are part of the University System of Georgia, one of the strongest public university systems in the country. We are a State Leadership Institution, the Military College of Georgia, and are one of only six senior military colleges in the nation,” Shannon said. “UNG is an incredible university, steeped in tradition, with tremendous opportunity, value and promise. We have something here at UNG that no one else does and we need to deliver it.”

The University of North Georgia (UNG) College of Education received $399,000 in federal funds to support future teachers as they begin their professional careers. The funding is designated for seniors pursuing bachelor’s degrees.

The University of North Georgia (UNG) is hosting Summer Language Institutes (SLI) from June 18-July 29 in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Russian. The six-week summer sessions allow students to earn eight credit hours, fulfilling the 1001 and 1002 foreign language requirement for most UNG bachelor’s degrees.

Some students take the courses before starting at UNG and others later in their time at UNG, and the institutes also draw students from other senior military colleges across the country.

Katherine Torres, ‘21, has earned the Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship, becoming the first University of North Georgia (UNG) alumna to win the fellowship. She is one of 45 selections for the honor. Funded by the U.S. Department of State, the fellowship attracts and prepares outstanding young people for foreign service careers.

As a scientist, Dr. Royce Dansby-Sparks is aware of the potential for contaminants in the well water that supplies his Lumpkin County home.

As an associate professor of chemistry at the University of North Georgia (UNG), Dansby-Sparks knows how to test the water for harmful impurities. This fall, Dansby-Sparks will connect the two roles as his students offer to test the well water of Dahlonega homeowners for metals.

This voluntary service is available through a collaboration between UNG and the University of Georgia Extension office for Lumpkin County.

The University of North Georgia (UNG) received another feather in its cap from the Fulbright U.S. Student Programnew window this week when it was designated as a top producer of Fulbright students for the fourth consecutive year. UNG was one of only two public universities in Georgia included on the 2020-21 top-producers list for the Fulbright Student Program and the only school in Georgia listed in the master’s institutions category.

Jan. 27, 2021 — During the fall 2020 semester, UNG student Catlin “Cat” Corrales developed and designed an app for Chattahoochee Riverkeeper’s Neighborhood Water Watch program.

October 26, 2020 – Since the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program launched in 2017, nearly 73% of participants from the University of North Georgia (UNG) are in graduate schools. Some are at top research schools in the country.
