Dr. Ashwani Monga named Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs for the University System of Georgia

University System of Georgia (USG) Chancellor Sonny Perdue today announced the appointment of Dr. Ashwani Monga as the system’s chief academic officer and executive vice chancellor of academic affairs, effective July 1, 2022.

Monga currently serves as provost and executive vice chancellor at Rutgers University—Newark, a position he has held since 2019. As that university’s chief academic officer, he is responsible for supporting the chancellor’s priorities. He is also on the faculty at Rutgers Business School, where he is a professor in the marketing department. He is a former chair of the department and has also served as the business school’s vice dean for academic programs and innovations, overseeing undergraduate and graduate business programs across Newark and New Brunswick.

Monga succeeds Dr. Tristan Denley, who left the system for a similar position in Louisiana. Dr. Stuart Rayfield has been serving as USG’s interim executive vice chancellor of academic affairs since January 2022.

“Dr. Monga is an accomplished administrator, respected professor and innovative strategist who will keep the system on track for excellence in its teaching, research and public service mission,” USG Chancellor Sonny Perdue said. “His experience on faculty at the University of South Carolina and at Rutgers, combined with his cutting-edge research in business, specifically marketing, make him a great fit to help our system become the undisputed best in the country while keeping students progressing toward prosperity as they earn their college degrees.”

In his role as USG’s chief academic officer, Monga will oversee the academic enterprise of a university system with 26 public colleges and universities, including academic innovation and development with the institutions; student affairs and enrollment management; student success initiatives; faculty development; the Georgia Film Academy; academic collaborative programs; distance education; academic and public libraries; and the Georgia Archives.

He also will hold a faculty appointment in the Scheller College of Business at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Monga’s research on consumer behavior, particularly the psychology of time and money, has been published in the most influential journals of marketing. He has also co-authored a book, “Becoming a Consumer Psychologist.”

An award-winning teacher, Monga has taught at the University of Minnesota; University of Texas, San Antonio; Ko? University, Turkey; the University of South Carolina where he first earned tenure, and most recently Rutgers University. He has also been commended for his research excellence. He was named a Marketing Science Institute Scholar in 2018. In addition, he has been honored with outstanding reviewer awards from several journals, and is a recipient of the 2018 Young Alumni Achievers Award from his MBA alma mater, the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India.

He earned his Ph.D. in business administration with a major in marketing, and minors in psychology and statistics, from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. He earned his MBA from the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad, India, and his Bachelor of Technology degree from the National Dairy Research Institute in Karnal, India.
